Science Department

Grade 7 Science

Our science curriculum provides children with varied experiences that initiate and support cognitive, social-emotional, and physical growth. Through this process scientific inquiry and critical thinking evolve. Encouraging children to develop a scientific lens to view the world fosters a disposition of wonder, care, and responsibility for self, others, and the natural and physical world. Using inquiry as an approach to teaching and learning enables children to gain knowledge and develop an understanding of their environment. Children’s natural curiosity develops from a scientific framework of exploring, observing, communicating, comparing, and drawing conclusions. Scientific literacy requires knowledge of basic principles and science process skills as well as proficiency in problem-solving and decision-making.

LIFE SCIENCE

Identify the cell as the basic unit of life, label its structures, and define their functions.
Discuss cell reproduction and transport.
Use a compound microscope to observe living cells.
Identify a model of DNA.
Complete and analyze a Mendelian Punnett Square.
Discuss the difference between “nature and nurture” and how it applies to human genetics.
List the evidence that biological evolution accounts for the diversity of all species on Earth.
Identify, label, and define the functions of the main parts of the following human body systems: digestive, nervous, circulatory, and reproductive.
Follow proper safety procedures and techniques while performing various dissections.

SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY, AND SOCIETY

Read about, discuss, analyze, and form opinions on various topics in cell biology, genetics, evolution, and health and human physiology.
Appreciate the diversity and contributions of scientists throughout history.
Possess decision-making skills and critical thinking which can be applied in situations regarding their sexuality.
Recognize that the mental, emotional, physical, and social health aspects of sexuality are interrelated.

GRADE 7 TOPICS

Science inquiry, living things, microscopes, introduction to cell biology, genetics, evolution, health and human physiology, bioethics, history of science, and human sexuality.

PHYSICS

Solve simple equations involving speed and acceleration.
Explain how Newton’s Laws of Motion apply to physical phenomena.

PHYSICAL SCIENCE

Measure the mass, volume, density, temperature and solubility of solids, liquids, and gasses in SI units.
List evidence that supports the Law of Conservation of Mass.
Distinguish between substances using characteristic properties.
Use characteristic properties to identify and separate matter (boiling point, density, solubility in a liquid).
Gather evidence to gain an understanding of the atomic model of matter.
Design, critique, and construct a scientific investigation.
Think critically and logically to make the relationships between the data and a conclusion.

SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY, AND SOCIETY

Recognize and analyze error, alternative explanations and alternative predictions.
Use the terms prediction, hypothesis, conclusion, theory, and law.
Compare class data and prepare statistical analysis (data charts histograms, and line graphs).

GRADE 8 TOPICS

Science inquiry, linear motion, Newton’s Laws of Motion, measuring matter, Law of Conservation of Mass, characteristic properties, identifying and separating matter, the atomic model of matter, formulating scientific conclusions, precision and accuracy of measurements, scientific laws, the computer as a tool.
